2022 Safety Leader Award

Natasha Mansfield

Natasha is the Senior Safety Coordinator for Processing Operations and Projects and Engineering at the Iron Ore Company of Canada located in Labrador City. She is responsible for overseeing all operations/projects across the mine site, which also includes supporting and leading 7 safety coordinators and numerous contractors. Dedicated, Inspiring, Passionate, Organized, Respectful, and Firm but Fair. These all describe the Natasha. While managing a busy home life as a wife and a mother of 3, she devotes much of her time and energy to her passion of safety and keeping people safe at her workplace. It is not just a job, it’s a way of life. Natasha has inspired and changed the way I do my job as a safety professional in so many ways from the first time I met her. I have never met anyone who cares for people the way she does. When speaking about safety to supervisors or employees you can immediately see how passionate she is about keeping people safe and ensuring the right processes is being followed to make our workplace safe for everyone. No matter the situation she is very approachable, always has an open-door policy and will answer the phone day or night to help where she can. To list examples of why I believe she is deserving of this award I would be writing all year long. Some I do want to share are:

  • Never backing down from doing what is right and will always support her team in any way possible by challenging the supervisors and project teams to maximize risk reduction.
  • Always encouraging the team to step of their elements, try new training, and pushing us to improve while having trust in the decisions we make and supporting us through those initiatives.
  • When someone on the team is struggling or overwhelmed, she is the first one to step in and take work off their plate and add it to hers. There is no task she will not do to take weight off her team’s shoulders.
  • As part of her leadership outside of work, she has led the safety team in community engagement such as float building and volunteering to dress up and walk in the local Christmas parade. To quote her "seeing the kids smile is good for the soul".
